Skeleton Trees & Bad TV

So in really odd news…

A skeleton came rising up out of the ground thanks to a really old tree tipping over.

Now, if that isn’t a story just waiting to be told, I don’t know what is.

Violently killed young man given a proper Christian burial ends up nourishing a tree for over 200 years.

I sense an urban fantasy coming on… Possibly Arthurian, but hopefully not as pointless as five seasons of Merlin was.

I do still love Morgana, however…

Katie McGrath deserved better than to die badly in Jurassic Park, especially after spending so much time as a criminally underused and excellent Morgana. But the world isn’t fair sometimes.

As the guy who used to be that skeleton no doubt knows.

Guardian – New Short Story

So, I have a new story up. This one arose from a writing exercise, although the idea had been in my head for years.

I won a prize of a year of short story writing mentorship from an established editor in a contest on my writing forum and the editor’s first challenge to me was to write a story with the word sacrifice.

Sometimes I need triggers to do things. I’m the worst procrastinator ever. Took me months to get around to those two stories. Thank God the editor was also a dear friend and willing to wait.

*Shameless Plug* That editor is CN Lesley, and her debut fantasy novel ‘Darkspire Reaches’ will be released shortly from Kristell Ink. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the beta manuscript and it was AMAZING! You can find out more and pre-order from her website, http://www.cnlesley.com.*End of Shameless Plug*

Back to your regularly scheduled programme.

I had been kicking around the idea of two star-crossed lovers meeting again after a long time, but they’re on opposite sides of the same war. This is what resulted. Not quite what I expected and I’m not sure I’ll ever publish it. It’s definitely in need of more polish.

But tell me what you think. Go read it and if you decide to vote or like it, thanks very much. It’s really appreciated.

Check out my new short story – Smile

Just posted another free story. It’s really more of a first draft, excerpt sort of thing. It wants to be a novel, but I’m not convinced it’s old enough to stand on its own two feet.

This one bounced around in my mind for years. I originally wanted to do a story about a stranger in a strange land–in this case, an immigrant from the Caribbean in a near future New York. I wanted him to be an ex-con, to have broken the laws of that time. For the longest while, it was going to be about home-sickness and that feeling that no matter what you do, you don’t belong.

Then I sat down to write it and this came out. Go figure.
Now it wants to be something I’ve never done before. An urban fantasy, but with Caribbean folklore. Sort of an ‘American Gods’, but maybe not so heavy. I don’t know. It’s young yet, and kids usually talk a good game. I just know I tend to like my stories to be quite a twisty ride, and this doesn’t feel like I’m done. It feels like I just got on the bus.

Help me decide? Vote on whether it’s done, it’s sucks or it needs to keep going.
Thanks guys. Don’t be a stranger.
